2013 was a big year for technology, not because of some big, new, unexpected thing, but because of what was built on top of big things that were new and unexpected a few short years ago.

At Macworld in early 2007, Steve Jobs dramatically revealed something called the iPhone (still great to watch). But just five short months earlier, there was a much quieter announcement of something called the Amazon EC2 Beta. Put together, that was a very significant six months.
